सुषुप्तस्थानः प्राज्ञो मकारः तृतीया मात्रा मितेर् अपीतेर् वा ।
मिनोति ह वा इदं सर्वम् अपीतिश् च भवति य एवं वेद

अनुवाद
Prājña, whose sphere is deep sleep, is the sound M, the third measure: from 'measuring' or from 'merging'. He who knows thus verily measures all this and becomes the [place of] merging.

The third correspondence: the depth = M. miteḥ — "from measuring" (√mā — "to measure"): when Oṁ is pronounced, the sounds "a" and "u" are as it were poured into the closing "m", like grain into a measuring vessel: deep sleep is the measure into which waking and dream are poured, the granary of experience; apīteḥ vā — "or from merging" (api-√i — "to enter into"): in "m" the syllable sinks, in deep sleep all experiences sink.
The fruits: minoti ha vā idaṁ sarvam — "he measures all this": one who knows the depth as a measure obtains a measuring-rod: he sees waking and dream at their true size — neither larger nor smaller; apītiś ca bhavati — "and he becomes the merging": the place into which experience flows and where it comes to rest — like the Prājña, in whom everything is nightly laid to rest.
Three measures have been traversed, and the whole life of consciousness is packed into a single syllable: the day is A, the night of images U, the night of depth M. But the syllable, pronounced to the end, does not end with the sound "m" — it ends in the silence after it. The last mantra is about that silence: the fourth "measure", which is no measure.
