यः शतरुद्रीयम् अधीते सो ऽग्निपूतो भवति स वायुपूतो भवति स आत्मपूतो भवति स सुरापानात् पूतो भवति स ब्रह्महत्यात् पूतो भवति स सुवर्णस्तेयात् पूतो भवति स कृत्याकृत्यात् पूतो भवति तस्माद् अविमुक्तम् आश्रितो भवत्य् आश्रमी सर्वदा सकृद् वा जपेत्

सः सुरापानात् पूतःsaḥ surāpānāt pūtaḥpurified from the drinking of liquor; clean of wine-drinking

सः ब्रह्महत्यात् पूतःsaḥ brahmahatyāt pūtaḥpurified from the slaying of a brāhmaṇa; clean of brahmahatyā

सः सुवर्णस्तेयात् पूतःsaḥ suvarṇasteyāt pūtaḥpurified from the theft of gold; clean of the stealing of gold

तस्मात् अविमुक्तम् आश्रितः भवतिtasmāt avimuktam āśritaḥ bhavatitherefore he takes refuge in the unforsaken; hence he finds shelter in the avimukta

आश्रमी सर्वदा सकृत् वा जपेत्āśramī sarvadā sakṛt vā japetlet him in his order repeat it always, or once; abiding in his āśrama let him recite it constantly or a single time

अनुवाद

He who studies the Śatarudriya becomes purified by fire, purified by wind, purified by the Ātman; he is purified from the drinking of liquor, from the slaying of a brāhmaṇa, from the theft of gold, from the done and the not-done; therefore he takes refuge in the unforsaken. Let him who lives in his order repeat it always, or at least once.

भाष्य

Prose after the verses — the phalaśruti, “the hearing of the fruit”.

The Śatarudriya is the famous hymn of the Yajurveda, “the hundred names of Rudra”, recited to this day in the worship of Śiva. The book ends by pointing to it.

The purifications listed are the same we read in the forty-fifth section of the Atharvaśiras and in the last chapter of the Rāma-tāpanī: by fire, by wind, by the Ātman.

And the same great sins: liquor, the slaying of a brāhmaṇa, the theft of gold.

Note a phrase which those books lacked: kṛtyākṛtyāt pūto bhavati — “he is purified from the done and the not-done”.

The second is unexpected. We understand guilt for what has been done; here is named guilt for the undone as well — for what a man failed to do though he ought.

This distinction exists in the śāstras, and it is strict: a duty omitted is a sin no less than a crime.

Then it is said: “therefore he takes refuge in the unforsaken”, avimuktam āśrito bhavati.

Avimukta — “the unforsaken”; we examined this word while reading the uttara-tāpanī of the Rāma-tāpanī, where it meant at once the place in Kāśī, the point between the brows, and the One who does not forsake.

And the last direction — the most humane: sarvadā sakṛd vā — “always, or at least once”.

The book that demanded renunciation and the last order of life ends by saying: even one time is enough.
