Ruru's grief, poured out in the solitude of the forest, turns into prayer -- and in this lies its transforming power. Instead of surrendering to despair alone, Ruru calls upon the whole store of his merit: charity, austerity, reverence for elders, purity of vows kept from birth. Scripture thus shows that accumulated punya (piety) is the soul's true treasure, one that can be drawn upon in the hour of need. Ruru's prayer is a satya-kriya -- an invocation of truth: he swears by his own righteousness, and the power of truth and accumulated good is able to turn back even death. What is revealed here is that spiritual merit is never lost (as the Gita also teaches: "effort on this path never perishes"), but bears fruit at the needed moment. Yet something deeper is at work: love that cannot accept loss seeks not earthly consolation but life itself for the beloved -- and this selfless love, resting on purity, opens the door to a miracle, as the narrative will go on to show.
