The restoration of Pramadvara by the will of Dharmaraja (Yama), the god of death and justice, affirms that death itself is subject to the higher law (dharma) and can withdraw when a righteous sacrifice demands it. It is significant that recourse is made precisely to Yama, the lord of karma and of the allotted term: what appears as an unbreakable fate turns out to be within the power of dharma, and can be altered by a righteous deed and grace from above. Scripture thus shows that the law of karma is not a blind mechanism but an instrument of justice in the hands of the Lord and His representatives, responsive to love and sacrifice. The reunion of Ruru and Pramadvara is the fruit of his self-giving: he who gave up his life gained a shared life. In this is a foreshadowing of the soul's reunion with the object of its eternal love through self-sacrifice. And there is another lesson: their shared life is henceforth consecrated by sacrifice -- they live in bliss "wishing each other well", for a union sealed by self-giving is filled with mutual service, not self-love. Such is love that has passed through death and sacrifice, and so been purified.
