Garuda's birth reveals the greatness of the Lord's perfect devotee-servant. Born at his appointed time (unlike the premature Aruna), he is at once so mighty and radiant that creation itself mistakes his splendor for the fire of universal dissolution (pralaya-agni) and seeks protection in fear. Scripture thus shows that the Lord's servant is filled with divine power (tejas) — a reflection of the glory of Vishnu Himself, whose bearer Garuda is destined to become. It is telling that even Agni acknowledges him as "equal to me in splendor": a devotee's spiritual power is not inferior to that of the gods. Here it is revealed that the devotee's greatness is not his own but granted by the Lord, and that true power is born of purity and of the purpose of serving God. The trembling of beings before the newborn Garuda pictures how the presence of a true servant of the Lord shakes the world, but then, once the gods offer their praise, turns into reverence. The radiance mistaken for a threat proves to be the light of service.
