Garuda's passage through the last barriers — the whirling razor-wheel and the poisonous serpents — shows that the path to the highest goal runs through mortal trials, to be overcome only by skill, agility, and fearlessness. The wheel of blades is an image of the barriers that cut down every unworthy seeker; the serpents, whose gaze incinerates, are guardians who cannot be overcome by direct assault but only by cunning (dust cast in the eyes). Thus the verse teaches: the innermost sanctum cannot be stormed by brute force — it demands both humility (the contracting of the body) and wise resourcefulness. But the greatest thing is still to come: having won the amrita at such cost, Garuda does not drink it. Here is the summit: one who has overcome everything for the nectar of immortality does not take it for himself. This is the highest image of selflessness (nishkama): Garuda wins the amrita not for himself but to free his mother, and therefore does not taste it, though he holds it in his [talons]. This is the perfection of devoted service — to labor without desiring the fruit for oneself. It is precisely this selflessness, as the following verses reveal, that captivates Lord Vishnu himself.
