Suta said: ‘Shesha was born first, immediately followed by Vasuki; then Airavata, Takshaka, Karkotaka, and Dhananjaya; Kaliya, Maninaga, the naga Apurana, and also Pinjaraka, Elapatra, and Vamana; the nagas Nila and Anila, Kalmasha and Shabala, Aryaka and Adika, and the naga Shalapotaka; Sumanomukha, Dadhimukha, and also Vimalapindaka, Apta, Kotanaka, Shankha, and Valashikha; Nishthyunaka, Hemaguha, Nahusha and Pingala, Bahyakarna, Hastipada, and also Mudgarapindaka; Kambala and Ashvatara, and the naga Kaliyaka; two nagas—Vritta and Samvartaka—and two known as the Padmas; the naga Shankhanaka and another, Sphandaka; the great naga Kshemaka and the naga Pindaraka; Karavira, Pushpadamshtra, Elaka, Bilvapandaka, Mushakada, Shankhashira, Purnadamshtra, Haridraka; Aparajita, Jyotika, and the naga Shrivaha; Kauravya, Dhritarashtra, Pushkara, Shalyaka; Viraja, Subahu, the mighty Shalipinda, Hastibhadra, Pitharaka, Mukhara, Konavasana; Kunjara, Kurara, and also the naga Prabhakara; Kumuda, Kumudaksha, Tittiri, Halika, and the two, Karkara and Akarkara, Kundodara and Mahodara. These are the foremost nagas I have named, O best of the twice-born; because of their multitude of names the rest are not listed. Their offspring, and the offspring of their offspring, considering it innumerable, I do not name, O best of the twice-born. Many thousands, millions, and tens of millions of them are here—it is impossible to count the serpents, O rich in austerity.’
