जरत्कारुः दुःख-शोक-परायणः स्वान् पितॄन् उवाचjaratkāruḥ duḥkha-śoka-parāyaṇaḥ svān pitṝn uvācaJaratkaru, overcome with grief, said to his ancestors
अहम् एव जरत्कारुः किल्बिषी भवतां सुतःaham eva jaratkāruḥ kilbiṣī bhavatāṃ sutaḥI am indeed Jaratkaru, your sinful son

Jaratkaru's consent shows renunciation joined with duty. At first, as an urdhvaretas -- one who preserves his seed -- he sought personal liberation and had no wish to marry; but seeing his ancestors perishing, he sets aside his own resolve for their sake. The verse thus teaches that duty toward others (here, toward one's ancestors) can outweigh even one's own spiritual aspiration; true renunciation is not selfish. Jaratkaru's conditions are striking: the wife must bear his name and be given to him as alms, and he will not support her. These conditions are not a whim but an expression of extreme non-attachment: even entering marriage out of duty, he seeks neither pleasure nor the burden of worldly care; he accepts a wife "as alms," without self-interest. Here is an example of yukta-vairagya, renunciation in action: one can perform worldly duty while remaining inwardly free, unattached to results and seeking no gain. Thus Jaratkaru, for the sake of saving his ancestors, descends to marriage, yet keeps the spirit of the renunciant.
