Here Menaka, having weighed her fear, nevertheless agrees to the task — and asks for helpers: the wind, the god of love (Manmatha), and fragrance. Her submission to Indra despite her fear is telling: the apsara carries out her lord's command even as she senses the danger; thus the tradition reveals the hierarchy of the celestial servants. But a moral shadow also falls over the whole scheme: Indra himself, king of the gods, engineers the fall of a righteous man through desire — and this does him no credit. Menaka is merely the instrument; the fault lies with the one who sent her. Her requests are also telling: wind that bares the garments, Manmatha who kindles passion, fragrance — all these are instruments of seduction (kama); thus the scripture lays bare the very mechanism of temptation: through the senses (sight, smell) and through the god of passion, the resolve of even the greatest ascetic is undone. The lesson runs deep: sensual passion is the strongest enemy of spiritual endeavor, and one who has conquered worlds and gods may yet fall before beauty. Thus is prepared the fall of Vishvamitra — and the birth of Shakuntala, ancestress of the Bharatas.
