तं शरौघमहाज्वालम् अस्त्रार्चिषम् अरिंदमम् ॥
पाण्डुपावकम् आसाद्य व्यदह्यन्त नराधिपाः ॥
ते ससेनाः ससेनेन विध्वंसितबला नृपाः ॥
पाण्डुना वशगाः कृत्वा करकर्मसु योजिताः ॥
तेन ते निर्जिताः सर्वे पृथिव्यां सर्वपार्थिवाः ॥
तम् एकं मेनिरे शूरं देवेष्व् इव पुरंदरम् ॥
taṃ śaraughamahājvālam astrārciṣam ariṃdamam ||
pāṇḍupāvakam āsādya vyadahyanta narādhipāḥ ||
te sasenāḥ sasenena vidhvaṃsitabalā nṛpāḥ ||
pāṇḍunā vaśagāḥ kṛtvā karakarmasu yojitāḥ ||
tena te nirjitāḥ sarve pṛthivyāṃ sarvapārthivāḥ ||
tam ekaṃ menire śūraṃ deveṣv iva puraṃdaram ||
"Having met this fire-Pandu — whose great flame is torrents of arrows, whose tongues are weapons, the subduer of enemies — the kings burned. Those kings, with their armies, their forces shattered, made submissive by Pandu, were set to the payment of tribute. By him all the kings on earth were vanquished, and him alone they honored as a hero, as among the gods they honor Indra."

Here Pandu is likened to an all-consuming fire — an image of irresistible military might. It is telling that he does not destroy the defeated but "makes them submissive" and lays tribute upon them: the goal of righteous war is not annihilation but submission to order. Here is measure in victory: even at the height of his strength, the king of dharma leaves the defeated their life and kingdom, demanding only the acknowledgment of his supremacy. The comparison with Indra is telling: Pandu on earth is as the king of the gods in heaven. And yet within this brilliance of worldly glory its fragility can be discerned: this invincible conqueror will soon, by a curse, abandon both throne and power, withdrawing into the forest — a reminder that there is no imperishable glory on earth save service to the Lord.
