शंतनो राजसिंहस्य भरतस्य च धीमतः ॥

pranaṣṭaḥ kīrtijaḥ śabdaḥ pāṇḍunā punar uddhṛtaḥ ||
ye purā kururāṣṭrāṇi jahruḥ kurudhanāni ca ||
te nāgapurasiṃhena pāṇḍunā karadāḥ kṛtāḥ ||
ity abhāṣanta rājāno rājāmātyāś ca saṃgatāḥ ||
pratītamanaso hṛṣṭāḥ paurajānapadaiḥ saha ||
"The faded sound of the glory of Shantanu, lion among kings, and of the wise Bharata, Pandu has raised up again. Those who once seized the realms and wealth of the Kurus — they have been made tributaries by the lion of Hastinapura, Pandu" — thus spoke, having gathered, the kings and the royal ministers, with cheered minds, joyful, together with the townsfolk and the country folk.

Here Pandu's feat is understood as the restoration of the family's honor. It is telling that he is not merely a conqueror but a restorer: the "faded sound" of his ancestors' glory is raised up again, and former offenders are turned into tributaries. Here is filial debt (pitri-rina) in its royal dimension: a worthy descendant returns to the line its lost glory, as a debt owed to the ancestors. The unanimity of the joy is also telling — kings, ministers, townsfolk, villagers: a righteous victory gladdens everyone, for it brings not enslavement but the restoration of just order. Thus scripture crowns Pandu's digvijaya with universal rejoicing, before turning the narrative to another, more detached page of his fate.
