"When she wept in many ways, again and again, embracing that corpse, an unseen voice, they say, spoke: 'Rise, Bhadra, go; I shall grant you here your boon: I shall beget offspring upon you, o fair-smiling one. On your own bed, o fair-hipped one, on the fourteenth or eighth night, having bathed after the passing of your courses, lie with me'".

Here a miracle takes place: the unseen voice of the dead king promises offspring to his faithful wife. It is telling that the dead man, by the power of his own austerity and righteousness, retains the power to grant a child: his spirit has not been extinguished and answers his wife's devotion. Here is the might of tapas and purity: the righteousness Vyushitashva had accumulated prevails over death itself, and it is his faithful wife's love that calls it forth. Telling is the specification of the timing (the fourteenth or eighth night after purification): even this wondrous conception is governed by measure and rite, not by willfulness. Thus scripture shows that strength of spirit and fidelity are stronger than death — a lesson by which Kunti wishes to inspire Pandu to beget a child through the power of his own austerity.
