गौतमो ऽपि तदापेत्य धनुर्वेदपरो ऽभवत् ॥
कृपया यन् मया बालाव् इमौ संवर्धिताव् इति ॥
तस्मात् तयोर् नाम चक्रे तद् एव स महीपतिः ॥

Here the children's name is born of the foster father's virtue. It is significant that they are named after the word "kripa" (compassion, pity): their very name forever preserves the memory of the mercy by which they were saved. One sees here how virtue is imprinted in a name: the king's compassion became the name of an entire line. It is significant too that Shantanu "performed the rites of purification over them" — not merely raising them but bringing them into dharma as his own. Thus scripture shows the fullness of adoption: to save, to raise, to consecrate, and to name — and from this mercy will come Kripa, a teacher whose very name will sound like a virtue.
