Here Drona, remembering their boyhood friendship and Drupada's promise, comes to him as a friend. His trustfulness is notable: he presents himself not as a petitioner but as an equal, by right of long-standing friendship. Here is the purity of Drona's heart, which does not imagine that friendship might depend on wealth and rank. Thus the text sets two natures side by side: Drona's guileless faithfulness and Drupada's coming cold treachery -- and from their collision a long enmity will grow.
