कृत्वा धनुषि ते मार्गान् रथचर्यासु चासकृत् ॥
गजपृष्ठे ऽश्वपृष्ठे च नियुद्धे च महाबलाः ॥
गृहीतखड्गचर्माणस् ततो भूयः प्रहारिणः ॥
त्सरुमार्गान् यथोद्दिष्टांश् चेरुः सर्वासु भूमिषु ॥
लाघवं सौष्ठवं शोभां स्थिरत्वं दृढमुष्टिताम् ॥
ददृशुस् तत्र सर्वेषां प्रयोगे खड्गचर्मणाम् ॥
kṛtvā dhanuṣi te mārgān rathacaryāsu cāsakṛt ||
gajapṛṣṭhe 'śvapṛṣṭhe ca niyuddhe ca mahābalāḥ ||
gṛhītakhaḍgacarmāṇas tato bhūyaḥ prahāriṇaḥ ||
tsarumārgān yathoddiṣṭāṃś ceruḥ sarvāsu bhūmiṣu ||
lāghavaṃ sauṣṭhavaṃ śobhāṃ sthiratvaṃ dṛḍhamuṣṭitām ||
dadṛśus tatra sarveṣāṃ prayoge khaḍgacarmaṇām ||
'Having displayed the techniques of the bow and of chariot-driving repeatedly, and combat on the back of an elephant, on the back of a horse, and hand-to-hand, the mighty ones then took up swords and shields and performed the techniques of hilt-handling, as prescribed, on all the grounds. Lightness, polish, beauty, steadiness, and firmness of grip were seen there in all of them in the handling of sword and shield.'

Here the full range of the princes' martial skill shows itself. Telling is the listing of the virtues of swordsmanship — lightness, polish, beauty, steadiness, firmness of grip: perfection in combat is not brute force but a harmony of speed, precision, and grace. Here it becomes clear that martial art, brought to perfection, attains beauty — a reflection of that harmony diffused through mastery consecrated by discipline. Thus the scripture shows the fullness of the princes' martial training, before turning to the fateful duel in which skill will give way to enmity.
