स तथेति प्रतिश्रुत्य खनको यत्नम् आस्थितः ॥
परिखाम् उत्किरन् नाम चकार सुमहद् बिलम् ॥
चक्रे च वेश्मनस् तस्य मध्ये नातिमहन् मुखम् ॥
कपाटयुक्तम् अज्ञातं समं भूम्या च भारत ॥
पुरोचनभयाच् चैव व्यदधात् संवृतं मुखम् ॥
स तत्र च गृहद्वारि वसत्य् अशुभधीः सदा ॥
sa tatheti pratiśrutya khanako yatnam āsthitaḥ ||
parikhām utkiran nāma cakāra sumahad bilam ||
cakre ca veśmanas tasya madhye nātimahan mukham ||
kapāṭayuktam ajñātaṃ samaṃ bhūmyā ca bhārata ||
purocanabhayāc caiva vyadadhāt saṃvṛtaṃ mukham ||
sa tatra ca gṛhadvāri vasaty aśubhadhīḥ sadā ||
"That digger, promising 'so be it', applied himself with effort and, as if digging a moat, made a very great underground passage; and in the middle of that house he made a not-too-large opening, fitted with a little door, unnoticed, level with the ground, O Bharata. And out of fear of Purochana he kept the opening covered; and that evil-minded Purochana always dwelt at the door of the house."

Here deliverance is prepared in secret, right under the enemy's nose. Telling is the digger's craft: the tunnel is dug under the guise of digging a moat, and its mouth is hidden level with the ground -- work so skillful it escapes even watchful Purochana. Here it is seen that in the work of deliverance both diligence and caution are needed: good is done carefully and covertly when openness would ruin it. Telling too is that the villain Purochana keeps watch at the door, unaware of the passage beneath the floor: the vigilance of evil is blind to what is being wrought under its very feet. Thus the scripture shows the triumph of foresighted wisdom over crude treachery: while the guard watches the door, a path to life is being cut beneath him.
