Vaishampayana said: "From Bhima's headlong running, stirred up by the surge of his thighs, a wind arose, O king, as at the coming of the bright summer months. He, crushing the flowering and fruit-bearing trees, breaking the shrubs and undergrowth close by his path, went thus, breaking trees, boundlessly mighty; and from his speed the Pandavas fell into something like a swoon. More than once crossing rivers with far banks, holding to his arms as to a raft, they went along the path in hiding, out of fear of the son of Dhritarashtra; and their delicate, glorious mother he bore tenderly on his back over the rough riverbanks."

Here Bhima's strength shows itself in selfless service. It is telling that the might which shatters trees turns to tenderness toward his mother: the one whose running raises the wind carries fragile Kunti with care. True strength, we see here, is gentle to the weak: the more powerful the righteous man, the more careful he is of the defenseless. It is telling too that the brothers cling to Bhima's arms "as to a raft": in the hour of calamity the strongest becomes the support and the crossing-place for all. Scripture thus shows an image of service through strength: the gift of Vayu, Bhima's might, is spent not on himself but to carry his mother and brothers through disaster.
