गव्यूतिमात्राद् आगत्य त्वरितो मातरं प्रति ॥
स सुप्तां मातरं दृष्ट्वा भ्रातॄंश् च वसुधातले ॥
भृशं दुःखपरीतात्मा विललाप वृकोदरः ॥
शयनेषु परार्ध्येषु ये पुरा वारणावते ॥

प्रासादशयनां नित्यं पुण्डरीकान्तरप्रभाम् ॥
सुकुमारतरां स्त्रीणां महार्हशयनोचिताम् ॥
शयानां पश्यताद्येह पृथिव्याम् अतथोचिताम् ॥
धर्माद् इन्द्राच् च वायोश् च सुषुवे या सुतान् इमान् ॥
सेयं भूमौ परिश्रान्ता शेते ह्य् अद्यातथोचिता ॥

dharmād indrāc ca vāyoś ca suṣuve yā sutān imān ||
seyaṃ bhūmau pariśrāntā śete hy adyātathocitā ||
"Having returned in haste to his mother, seeing her and his brothers asleep on the ground, Vrikodara, deeply seized with grief, wept: 'They who before in Varanavata never knew sleep even on the most precious of beds — now sleep on the ground! The sister of Vasudeva, the daughter of Kuntibhoja, Kunti, honored for her every auspicious mark, the daughter-in-law of Vichitravirya, the wife of the great Pandu, who ever slept on a palace bed, radiant as the heart of a lotus, the most delicate of women, worthy of a priceless couch — behold her sleeping here, on the ground, so unaccustomed to it! She who bore these sons of Dharma, Indra, and Vayu — here she lies, worn out, sleeping now on the earth, unaccustomed to it!'"

Here Bhima's lament reveals both tenderness of heart and the bitterness of reversal. It is telling that this fearsome strongman weeps — not for himself but for his mother and brothers cast down from luxury into deprivation: his strength is joined to a loving, sensitive heart. Here it is shown that true manliness is not foreign to compassion: firm in battle, he is soft in love. Telling too is his meditation on reversal: yesterday, palace couches — today, bare earth; through Bhima's voice scripture shows the fragility of worldly happiness, which turns to disaster in an instant. Here is a lesson in anitya, impermanence: one must not cling to passing wealth, for the wheel of fate turns; only dharma and devotion to the Lord endure. Thus in Bhima's lament there is both love and bitter wisdom about the instability of earthly blessings.
