Vaishampayana said: "Thus counseled by her, the husband, embracing her, O Bharata, quietly shed tears, grievously sorrowing together with his wife."

Here the husband answers his wife's arguments not with words but with tears. It is telling that the brahmin, overcome with grief, does not accept her sacrifice lightly: his silent tears are the refusal of a heart that cannot betray the one it loves, however reasonable her arguments may be. Here it is revealed that love is not settled by arithmetic: the wife's reason is ready for sacrifice, but her husband's heart resists. Telling, too, is that they weep together, embracing: in the midst of calamity, love unites them rather than divides them. Thus the text shows the impasse of pure hearts that love one another more than themselves; and it is in this very moment, when both arguments and tears are exhausted, that deliverance through Kunti and Bhima is about to arrive.
