उपपन्नं सताम् एतद् यद् ब्रवीषि तपोधने ॥
न तु दुःखम् इदं शक्यं मानुषेण व्यपोहितुम् ॥

The brahmin said: "What you say is worthy of the good, O rich in austerity; but this sorrow cannot be averted by a human being."

Here the grieving man, moved by her compassion, still sees no hope. His words are significant: "no human can avert this" — he has measured the trouble by the measure of human strength and found it beyond bearing. Here is providence's hidden irony: the brahmin is right that an ordinary man cannot manage it — yet he does not know that beside him stands the son of Vayu, endowed with superhuman strength. Thus the verse shows that the limit of human power is not the limit of the possible: where human strength runs out, a power granted from above begins to act; and the brahmin's despair will be put to shame by the deliverance to come.
