नक्तंदिनम् अथैकस्थे स्थिते तस्मिञ् जनाधिपे ॥
अथाजगाम विप्रर्षिस् तदा द्वादशमे ऽहनि ॥
स विदित्वैव नृपतिं तपत्या हृतमानसम् ॥
दिव्येन विधिना ज्ञात्वा भावितात्मा महान् ऋषिः ॥
तथा तु नियतात्मानं स तं नृपतिसत्तमम् ॥
आबभाषे स धर्मात्मा तस्यैवार्थचिकीर्षया ॥

sa viditvaiva nṛpatiṃ tapatyā hṛtamānasam ||
divyena vidhinā jñātvā bhāvitātmā mahān ṛṣiḥ ||
tathā tu niyatātmānaṃ sa taṃ nṛpatisattamam ||
ābabhāṣe sa dharmātmā tasyaivārthacikīrṣayā ||
"When that lord of men had stood day and night in one place, the brahmin-sage came on the twelfth day. Perceiving, by divine means, that the king's mind had been stolen away by Tapati, that great sage, self-realized, addressed that best of kings, so disciplined in spirit, that righteous-souled one, wishing to bring about his welfare."

Here the teacher, who knows what is hidden, comes at a silent call. It is telling that Vasishtha appears, having learned of the king's plight "by divine means": a true guru perceives his disciple's need and hastens to help unbidden. Here is shown the all-knowing love of the teacher, which answers even a mental plea. Telling too is that the king stood in austerity for twelve days: grace descends upon steadfastness and patience. Thus the text shows that aspiration, sustained by perseverance, draws the guide; and Vasishtha comes to bring about the welfare of the devoted king.
