एवम् उक्तस् तदा सूदः सो ऽनासाद्यामिषं क्व चित् ॥
निवेदयाम् आस तदा तस्मै राज्ञे व्यथान्वितः ॥
राजा तु रक्षसाविष्टः सूदम् आह गतव्यथः ॥
अप्य् एनं नरमांसेन भोजयेति पुनः पुनः ॥
तथेत्य् उक्त्वा ततः सूदः संस्थानं वध्यघातिनाम् ॥
गत्वा जहार त्वरितो नरमांसम् अपेतभीः ॥
evam uktas tadā sūdaḥ so 'nāsādyāmiṣaṃ kva cit ||
nivedayām āsa tadā tasmai rājñe vyathānvitaḥ ||
rājā tu rakṣasāviṣṭaḥ sūdam āha gatavyathaḥ ||
apy enaṃ naramāṃsena bhojayeti punaḥ punaḥ ||
tathety uktvā tataḥ sūdaḥ saṃsthānaṃ vadhyaghātinām ||
gatvā jahāra tvarito naramāṃsam apetabhīḥ ||
"The cook, finding meat nowhere, reported it to the king in anxiety; but the king, possessed by the rakshasa, without anxiety, again and again told him: 'Feed him human flesh, then.' And the cook, saying 'so be it,' fearlessly went to the place of execution and quickly took human flesh."

Here possession drives the king to a crime unthinkable before. The contrast is significant: the cook is "seized with anxiety," while the king "without anxiety" orders human flesh to be served — the indwelling demon has stripped the sovereign of conscience and horror before sin. Here it is shown how terrible is evil's power over the darkened mind: it commands the monstrous as calmly as the ordinary. Also significant is the cook's obedience "without fear": a servant who carries out an evil command shares in the guilt. Thus the scripture reveals the depth of the fall; and the lawless order prepares for the lawless king his deserved curse.
