प्रतिलभ्य ततः संज्ञाम् अभिवाद्य कृताञ्जलिः ॥
उवाच नृपतिः काले वसिष्ठम् ऋषिसत्तमम् ॥
सौदासो ऽहं महाभाग याज्यस् ते द्विजसत्तम ॥
अस्मिन् काले यद् इष्टं ते ब्रूहि किं करवाणि ते ॥
वसिष्ठ उवाच
वृत्तम् एतद् यथाकालं गच्छ राज्यं प्रशाधि तत् ॥
ब्राह्मणांश् च मनुष्येन्द्र मावमंस्थाः कदा चन ॥
pratilabhya tataḥ saṃjñām abhivādya kṛtāñjaliḥ ||
uvāca nṛpatiḥ kāle vasiṣṭham ṛṣisattamam ||
saudāso 'haṃ mahābhāga yājyas te dvijasattama ||
asmin kāle yad iṣṭaṃ te brūhi kiṃ karavāṇi te ||
vasiṣṭha uvāca
vṛttam etad yathākālaṃ gaccha rājyaṃ praśādhi tat ||
brāhmaṇāṃś ca manuṣyendra māvamaṃsthāḥ kadā cana ||
"Having regained his senses, the king, bowing with joined palms, then spoke to Vasishtha, the best of rishis." The king said: "I am Saudasa, O most fortunate one, he whose priest you are, O best of the twice-born; tell me now what you desire, what I should do for you." Vasishtha said: "All this happened in due time; go, rule that kingdom, and never disregard the brahmins, O lord of men."

Here the healed man returns to humility and duty. It is telling that the king, coming to his senses, at once bows before the sage and offers his service: healed of evil, he turns to reverence for the saint. Telling too is Vasishtha's instruction — with no reproach for his slain sons: "rule the kingdom and honor the brahmins"; the saint does not take revenge but restores the sinner to dharma. Here is a freedom from malice that meets the repentant not with rebuke but with guidance. Thus the text reveals that the aim of the righteous is not punishment but correction; and Vasishtha, having lost his sons, cares only that the king should rule righteously.
