Here the wild forest mirrors the king's state, darkened by the curse. It is telling that the crowned ruler, driven out by the curse, wanders in a wilderness full of beasts: the outer wildness echoes the inner one -- a man overcome by evil is reduced to the lot of a beast. Here it is seen how sin and curse cast a man out of ordered life into chaos. Thus scripture shows the king's fall from palace to wilderness; and the dreadful, resounding forest is an image of the soul's turmoil, seized by an evil force.
