मुक्तशापश् च राजर्षिः कालेन महता ततः ॥
ऋतुकाले ऽभिपतितो मदयन्त्या निवारितः ॥
न हि सस्मार नृपतिस् तं शापं शापमोहितः ॥
देव्याः सो ऽथ वचः श्रुत्वा स तस्या नृपसत्तमः ॥
तं च शापम् अनुस्मृत्य पर्यतप्यद् भृशं तदा ॥
muktaśāpaś ca rājarṣiḥ kālena mahatā tataḥ ||
ṛtukāle 'bhipatito madayantyā nivāritaḥ ||
na hi sasmāra nṛpatis taṃ śāpaṃ śāpamohitaḥ ||
devyāḥ so 'tha vacaḥ śrutvā sa tasyā nṛpasattamaḥ ||
taṃ ca śāpam anusmṛtya paryatapyad bhṛśaṃ tadā ||
'And the royal sage, freed from the curse after a long time, when he rushed to his wife in the season of fertility, was held back by Madayanti; for the king, himself deluded by the curse, did not remember it. But hearing the queen's word, that best of kings, remembering the curse, grieved bitterly then.'

Here a faithful wife shields her husband from mortal danger. It is telling that Madayanti restrains the king who has forgotten the curse: a watchful wife remembers what her husband forgot, and saves him from ruin. It is seen from this how precious a wise and remembering wife is: her word turned death aside. Telling too is the king's grief on remembering the curse: childlessness weighs on him like an unfinished debt. Thus scripture shows the wife's prudence and the king's burden; and from this very grief is born the decision to turn to Vasishtha.
