पुत्रपौत्रं च यच् चान्यद् अस्माकं विद्यते धनम् ॥
अवमानभयाद् एतत् स्वधर्मस्य च रक्षणात् ॥
स्वयंवराणां चान्येषां मा भूद् एवंविधा गतिः ॥

Here the rift between profession and deed is laid bare. It is telling that the kings loudly honor brahmins above all else -- "for their sake, both life and kingdom" -- yet in the same moment are ready to transgress out of wounded honor: their lips praise dharma while pride moves their hearts. This is the ordinary hypocrisy of passion: fine words cloak an unworthy impulse. So the text shows the self-contradiction of the proud heart; behind the loud protestations of reverence for brahmins lurks a readiness for wrongdoing.
