पितामह उवाच
ऋते ऽमरत्वम् अन्यद् वां सर्वम् उक्तं भविष्यति ॥
अन्यद् वृणीतां मृत्योश् च विधानम् अमरैः समम् ॥
करिष्यावेदम् इति यन् महद् अभ्युत्थितं तपः ॥
युवयोर् हेतुनानेन नामरत्वं विधीयते ॥
त्रैलोक्यविजयार्थाय भवद्भ्याम् आस्थितं तपः ॥
हेतुनानेन दैत्येन्द्रौ न वां कामं करोम्य् अहम् ॥
pitāmaha uvāca
ṛte 'maratvam anyad vāṃ sarvam uktaṃ bhaviṣyati ||
anyad vṛṇītāṃ mṛtyoś ca vidhānam amaraiḥ samam ||
kariṣyāvedam iti yan mahad abhyutthitaṃ tapaḥ ||
yuvayor hetunānena nāmaratvaṃ vidhīyate ||
trailokyavijayārthāya bhavadbhyām āsthitaṃ tapaḥ ||
hetunānena daityendrau na vāṃ kāmaṃ karomy aham ||
The Grandsire said: "Except for immortality, everything else you have said shall come to pass; choose something else, and a form of death equal to that of the immortals. The great austerity you undertook with the words 'let us accomplish this' -- for this very reason immortality is not granted to you; the austerity was undertaken by you for the conquest of the three worlds, and for this reason, O lords of the daityas, I do not grant that wish of yours."

Here wisdom from above refuses greed unbounded power. It is telling that Brahma withholds immortality precisely because their aim is the conquest of the worlds: Providence does not arm evil with invulnerability. Here is the lesson: the Lord sets a limit on the might of the unrighteous, guarding order. Thus the scripture shows the wise restraint of the boon; and the very refusal is a mercy to the worlds.
