Vaishampayana said: "Then to the tirthas on the southern sea, bull of the Bharatas, he came - most sacred, adorned by ascetics; but the ascetics there avoided five tirthas, formerly visited: the tirtha of Agastya, Saubhadra, the most sacred Paulomi, clear Karandhama, granting the fruit of the ashvamedha, and the tirtha of Bharadvaja, the great purifier from sin."

Here holy places, once renowned, now lie abandoned because of calamity. It is significant that tirthas which purify from sin are forsaken by ascetics: even a sacred place can become inaccessible when evil has seized it. What is good needs defense against the evil that assails it. Thus the scripture reveals the desolation of holy places; and Arjuna is destined to restore them to the ascetics.
