अवध्यास् तु स्त्रियः सृष्टा मन्यन्ते धर्मचिन्तकाः ॥
तस्माद् धर्मेण धर्मज्ञ नास्मान् हिंसितुम् अर्हसि ॥
सर्वभूतेषु धर्मज्ञ मैत्रो ब्राह्मण उच्यते ॥
सत्यो भवतु कल्याण एष वादो मनीषिणाम् ॥
शरणं च प्रपन्नानां शिष्टाः कुर्वन्ति पालनम् ॥
शरणं त्वां प्रपन्नाः स्म तस्मात् त्वं क्षन्तुम् अर्हसि ॥
avadhyās tu striyaḥ sṛṣṭā manyante dharmacintakāḥ ||
tasmād dharmeṇa dharmajña nāsmān hiṃsitum arhasi ||
sarvabhūteṣu dharmajña maitro brāhmaṇa ucyate ||
satyo bhavatu kalyāṇa eṣa vādo manīṣiṇām ||
śaraṇaṃ ca prapannānāṃ śiṣṭāḥ kurvanti pālanam ||
śaraṇaṃ tvāṃ prapannāḥ sma tasmāt tvaṃ kṣantum arhasi ||
"'Women are created inviolable' — so hold those who ponder dharma; therefore, by dharma, O knower of dharma, you must not harm us; toward all beings the brahmin is called a friend; may this saying of the wise prove true; and the well-bred protect those who take refuge with them; we have taken refuge with you, therefore you must forgive."

Here the guilty appeal to the very foundations of dharma. It is significant that they remind him: the brahmin is a friend to all beings, and those who take refuge must be protected; even the guilty may rightly call upon the mercy of the law. Herein lies the sanctity of sharaṇagati: one who has taken refuge is not turned away. Thus the scripture reveals the power of the plea for protection; and the law of compassion bends even an angered ascetic.
