असंप्राप्तास् तु ता धारास् तेजसा जातवेदसः ॥
ख एव समशुष्यन्त न काश् चित् पावकं गताः ॥
ततो नमुचिहा क्रुद्धो भृशम् अर्चिष्मतस् तदा ॥
पुनर् एवाभ्यवर्षत् तम् अम्भः प्रविसृजन् बहु ॥
अर्चिर् धाराभिसंबद्धं धूमविद्युत्समाकुलम् ॥
बभूव तद् वनं घोरं स्तनयित्नुसघोषवत् ॥
asaṃprāptās tu tā dhārās tejasā jātavedasaḥ ||
kha eva samaśuṣyanta na kāś cit pāvakaṃ gatāḥ ||
tato namucihā kruddho bhṛśam arciṣmatas tadā ||
punar evābhyavarṣat tam ambhaḥ pravisṛjan bahu ||
arcir dhārābhisaṃbaddhaṃ dhūmavidyutsamākulam ||
babhūva tad vanaṃ ghoraṃ stanayitnusaghoṣavat ||
"But those streams, not reaching the fire, dried up in the very sky from the heat of Jataveda; not one of them reached the fire; then the slayer of Namuchi [Indra], greatly enraged at the blazing one, poured down upon it again, releasing water in abundance; flame, entwined with streams of rain, full of smoke and lightning -- that forest became terrible, resounding with thunder."

Here even Indra's torrents prove powerless before Agni, shielded by the heroes. It is telling that the water dries up before reaching the fire: where Narayana and Nara stand as allies, there even Indra's element cannot prevail. A design upheld by the Lord even the king of the gods cannot turn aside. Thus scripture reveals the clash of water and fire, and before the alliance of Krishna and Arjuna, Indra himself is forced to retreat.
