वैशंपायन उवाच
तस्याभिवर्षतो वारि पाण्डवः प्रत्यवारयत् ॥
शरवर्षेण बीभत्सुर् उत्तमास्त्राणि दर्शयन् ॥
शरैः समन्ततः सर्वं खाण्डवं चापि पाण्डवः ॥
छादयाम् आस तद् वर्षम् अपकृष्य ततो वनात् ॥
न च स्म किं चिच् छक्नोति भूतं निश्चरितुं ततः ॥
संछाद्यमाने खगमैर् अस्यता सव्यसाचिना ॥
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
tasyābhivarṣato vāri pāṇḍavaḥ pratyavārayat ||
śaravarṣeṇa bībhatsur uttamāstrāṇi darśayan ||
śaraiḥ samantataḥ sarvaṃ khāṇḍavaṃ cāpi pāṇḍavaḥ ||
chādayām āsa tad varṣam apakṛṣya tato vanāt ||
na ca sma kiṃ cic chaknoti bhūtaṃ niścarituṃ tataḥ ||
saṃchādyamāne khagamair asyatā savyasācinā ||
Vaishampayana said: "The Pandava repelled that one [Indra], pouring down water, with a shower of arrows -- Vibhatsu, displaying superior weapons; with arrows the Pandava covered the whole of Khandava from all sides, and turned that rain away from the forest; and not a single creature could escape from there, as the sky was covered with flying arrows hurled by Savyasachin."

Here the arrows of Arjuna contend with the rain of Indra himself. It is significant that a man repels the downpour of the king of the gods: one shielded from above overcomes even heavenly power. Here is the image of one kept by the Lord: he is unconquerable. Thus the scripture reveals the might of Arjuna; and this feat is terrible, for not a single creature escapes alive.
