दुर्योधन उवाच
अयम् उत्सहते राजञ् श्रियम् आहर्तुम् अक्षवित् ॥
द्यूतेन पाण्डुपुत्रेभ्यस् तत् तुभ्यं तात रोचताम् ॥
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच
स्थितो ऽस्मि शासने भ्रातुर् विदुरस्य महात्मनः ॥
तेन संगम्य वेत्स्यामि कार्यस्यास्य विनिश्चयम् ॥
दुर्योधन उवाच
विहनिष्यति ते बुद्धिं विदुरो मुक्तसंशयः ॥
पाण्डवानां हिते युक्तो न तथा मम कौरव ॥
duryodhana uvāca
ayam utsahate rājañ śriyam āhartum akṣavit ||
dyūtena pāṇḍuputrebhyas tat tubhyaṃ tāta rocatām ||
dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca
sthito 'smi śāsane bhrātur vidurasya mahātmanaḥ ||
tena saṃgamya vetsyāmi kāryasyāsya viniścayam ||
duryodhana uvāca
vihaniṣyati te buddhiṃ viduro muktasaṃśayaḥ ||
pāṇḍavānāṃ hite yukto na tathā mama kaurava ||
[Duryodhana:] "This man [Shakuni], a master of dice, is ready, O king, to take away the fortune of the sons of Pandu by gambling; may this please you, father." [Dhritarashtra:] "I abide by the counsel of my brother, the great-souled Vidura; having met with him, I shall learn the decision on this matter." [Duryodhana:] "Vidura, free from hesitation, will turn your resolve aside; he is devoted to the welfare of the Pandavas, not to mine, O Kaurava."

Duryodhana pre-emptively dismisses the wise counselor: Vidura, he claims, is biased. It is telling how evil removes an obstacle to its design — not by refuting the counselor's truth, but by slandering his impartiality. The verse teaches the cunning of vice: to avoid hearing an unwelcome truth, the truthful man is declared prejudiced. And the accusation that Vidura is devoted to "the welfare of the Pandavas" is an unwitting praise of him: he is devoted to the welfare of the righteous, that is, to dharma itself. Whoever, plotting evil, hastens to remove an honest counselor thereby testifies that his own conscience is an obstacle to him; and slandering the wise is the first step toward unhindered wrongdoing.
