[Karna:] "Lost are Nakula, Bhimasena, Yudhishthira, Sahadeva and Arjuna; having become a slave, enter, O Yajnaseni — lost are your husbands, and they exist no more as your masters. What benefit, then, does Partha now see in himself, what valor and manhood, he who in the midst of the assembly staked and lost this daughter of Drupada the Panchalya at dice?"

Karna stings both the queen and the king: he mocks Yudhishthira, asking where his "valor and manhood" now are, as though the one who lost at dice had also lost his manly dignity. But mockery of the fallen exposes only the mocker: triumph over the defenseless is not valor but its absence. It is telling that the courage the persecutors boast of is displayed only in abuse — where there is no opposing force. The verse teaches that a person is known not in the hours of his strength but in how he conducts himself toward the fallen; and that one who taunts the prostrate reveals that all his bravery rested on another's weakness. Truly the valor of the Parthas will yet show itself — not in the assembly, but on the battlefield.
