ते वयं पाण्डवधनैः सर्वान् संपूज्य पार्थिवान् ॥
यदि तान् योधयिष्यामः किं वा नः परिहास्यति ॥
अहीन् आशीविषान् क्रुद्धान् दंशाय समुपस्थितान् ॥
कृत्वा कण्ठे च पृष्ठे च कः समुत्स्रष्टुम् अर्हति ॥
आत्तशस्त्रा रथगताः कुपितास् तात पाण्डवाः ॥
निःशेषं नः करिष्यन्ति क्रुद्धा ह्य् आशीविषा यथा ॥

yadi tān yodhayiṣyāmaḥ kiṃ vā naḥ parihāsyati ||

kṛtvā kaṇṭhe ca pṛṣṭhe ca kaḥ samutsraṣṭum arhati ||
āttaśastrā rathagatāḥ kupitās tāta pāṇḍavāḥ ||
niḥśeṣaṃ naḥ kariṣyanti kruddhā hy āśīviṣā yathā ||
[Duryodhana:] "If we, having honored all the kings with the wealth of the Pandavas, then make war upon them — what will not depart from us [i.e., we shall perish]? Who is able to safely release angry, venomous serpents, poised to strike, once he has placed them on his own neck and back? Having taken up arms, mounted on their chariots, enraged, O father, the Pandavas will destroy us utterly, like furious venomous serpents."

Duryodhana's very fear is an involuntary testimony to the truth: he knows the strength and the righteousness of those he persecutes, and therefore dares not meet them openly. The image of serpents on one's neck exposes him: it was not the Pandavas who coiled around him, but he himself who nurtured the enmity, placing his own doom upon himself. So an unclean conscience sees threats everywhere, for the one who has done wrong fears the one he has wronged. The verse teaches that the oppressor forever lives in fear, for he awaits just retribution; that fear of an enemy's strength breeds no repentance in a malicious heart but only spurs it to fresh treachery; and that one who has himself brought danger upon himself blames everyone for it but himself.
