वार्यमाणो ऽपि भीष्मेण द्रोणेन विदुरेण च ॥
पाण्डवानां प्रियां भार्यां द्रौपदीं धर्मचारिणीम् ॥
प्राहिणोद् आनयेहेति पुत्रो दुर्योधनस् तव ॥
सूतपुत्रं सुमन्दात्मा निर्लज्जः प्रातिकामिनम् ॥
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच
यस्मै देवाः प्रयच्छन्ति पुरुषाय पराभवम् ॥
बुद्धिं तस्यापकर्षन्ति सो ऽपाचीनानि पश्यति ॥
बुद्धौ कलुषभूतायां विनाशे प्रत्युपस्थिते ॥
अनयो नयसंकाशो हृदयान् नापसर्पति ॥
अनर्थाश् चार्थरूपेण अर्थाश् चानर्थरूपिणः ॥
उत्तिष्ठन्ति विनाशान्ते नरं तच् चास्य रोचते ॥
न कालो दण्डम् उद्यम्य शिरः कृन्तति कस्य चित् ॥
कालस्य बलम् एतावद् विपरीतार्थदर्शनम् ॥
vāryamāṇo 'pi bhīṣmeṇa droṇena vidureṇa ca ||
pāṇḍavānāṃ priyāṃ bhāryāṃ draupadīṃ dharmacāriṇīm ||
prāhiṇod ānayeheti putro duryodhanas tava ||

yasmai devāḥ prayacchanti puruṣāya parābhavam ||
buddhiṃ tasyāpakarṣanti so 'pācīnāni paśyati ||
buddhau kaluṣabhūtāyāṃ vināśe pratyupasthite ||
anayo nayasaṃkāśo hṛdayān nāpasarpati ||
anarthāś cārtharūpeṇa arthāś cānartharūpiṇaḥ ||
uttiṣṭhanti vināśānte naraṃ tac cāsya rocate ||
na kālo daṇḍam udyamya śiraḥ kṛntati kasya cit ||
kālasya balam etāvad viparītārthadarśanam ||
[Sanjaya:] "Though restrained by Bhishma, Drona, and Vidura, your son Duryodhana, most feeble-minded and shameless, sent the son of a suta, Pratikamin, to bring here the beloved wife of the Pandavas, Draupadi, who walks the path of dharma. To that man to whom the gods grant defeat, they take away his reason — and he sees everything awry. When reason is clouded and ruin is near, wrong, resembling right in appearance, does not depart from the heart. Misfortunes in the guise of blessings, and blessings in the guise of misfortunes, appear to a man near the end, close to ruin — and this pleases him. Not always does Time, raising its staff, cut off anyone's head: the whole power of Time lies only in this — in the perverted vision of things."

Sanjaya reveals the hidden law of ruin: fate strikes not from without but from within — by clouding the reason, so that the doomed man rushes toward his own destruction, mistaking misfortune for good. "The power of Time is in the perverted vision of things": not the staff, not the sword, but the blinding of the mind is the true instrument of destiny. Thus the one perishing is not overpowered but deceived; and the warnings of the wise do not reach him, for his very reason has been turned against itself. The verse teaches that the greatest punishment is the clouding of discernment, whereby evil appears as good; that one who rejects the counsel of Bhishma, Drona, and Vidura already bears within him the mark of doom; and that Time executes not by a blow but by blinding — and therefore to keep clarity of discernment matters more than to keep life itself.
