वासुदेव उवाचvāsudeva uvācaVasudeva said
एवम् स पुरुषव्याघ्र शाल्वः राज्ञाम् महारिपुः युध्यमानः मया संख्ये वियत् अभ्यागमत् पुनःevam sa puruṣavyāghra śālvaḥ rājñām mahāripuḥ yudhyamānaḥ mayā saṃkhye viyat abhyāgamat punaḥthus Shalva, O tiger among men, the great enemy of kings, fighting with me in battle, rose again into the sky
ततः शतघ्नीः च महागदाः च दीप्तान् च शूलान् मुसलान् असीन् च चिक्षेप रोषात् मयि मन्दबुद्धिः शाल्वः महाराज जयाभिकाङ्क्षीtataḥ śataghnīḥ ca mahāgadāḥ ca dīptān ca śūlān musalān asīn ca cikṣepa roṣāt mayi mandabuddhiḥ śālvaḥ mahārāja jayābhikāṅkṣīthen the dull-witted Shalva, desiring victory, in his fury hurled at me shataghnis, great maces, blazing spears, clubs and swords, O great king
तान् आशुगैः आपततः अहम् आशु निवार्य तूर्णम् खगमान् खे एव द्विधा त्रिधा च अच्छिनम् आशु मुक्तैः ततः अन्तरिक्षे निनदः बभूवtān āśugaiḥ āpatataḥ aham āśu nivārya tūrṇam khagamān khe eva dvidhā tridhā ca acchinam āśu muktaiḥ tataḥ antarikṣe ninadaḥ babhūvaI quickly stopped them with swift arrows, and while they were still flying through the sky, swiftly cut them in two and three with my loosed arrows; then a roar arose in the firmament
ततः शतसहस्रेण शराणाम् नतपर्वणाम् दारुकम् वाजिनः च एव रथम् च समवाकिरत्tataḥ śatasahasreṇa śarāṇām nataparvaṇām dārukam vājinaḥ ca eva ratham ca samavākiratthen with a hundred thousand arrows of bent joints he covered Daruka, the horses and the chariot
ततः माम् अब्रवीत् वीर दारुकः विह्वलन् इव स्थातव्यम् इति तिष्ठामि शाल्वबाणप्रपीडितःtataḥ mām abravīt vīra dārukaḥ vihvalan iva sthātavyam iti tiṣṭhāmi śālvabāṇaprapīḍitaḥthen Daruka, as if losing strength, said to me: I must stand, and I stand, O hero, though tormented by Shalva's arrows
इति तस्य निशम्य अहम् सारथेः करुणम् वचः अवेक्षमाणः यन्तारम् अपश्यम् शरपीडितम्iti tasya niśamya aham sāratheḥ karuṇam vacaḥ avekṣamāṇaḥ yantāram apaśyam śarapīḍitamhearing these pitiful words of the charioteer, and looking at the one guiding the horses, I saw him wounded by arrows
न तस्य उरसि न उ मूर्ध्नि न काये न भुजद्वये अन्तरम् पाण्डवश्रेष्ठ पश्यामि न हतम् शरैःna tasya urasi na u mūrdhni na kāye na bhujadvaye antaram pāṇḍavaśreṣṭha paśyāmi na hatam śaraiḥneither on his chest, nor on his head, nor on his body, nor on either arm did I see a place, O best of Pandavas, unstruck by arrows
स तु बाणवरोत्पीडात् विस्रवति असृक् उल्बणम् अभिवृष्टः यथा मेघैः गिरिः गैरिकधातुमान्sa tu bāṇavarotpīḍāt visravati asṛk ulbaṇam abhivṛṣṭaḥ yathā meghaiḥ giriḥ gairikadhātumānfrom the force of the finest arrows he was profusely streaming blood, like a mountain of red ore drenched by the rain of clouds
अभीषुहस्तम् तम् दृष्ट्वा सीदन्तम् सारथिम् रणे अस्तम्भयम् महाबाहो शाल्वबाणप्रपीडितम्abhīṣuhastam tam dṛṣṭvā sīdantam sārathim raṇe astambhayam mahābāho śālvabāṇaprapīḍitamseeing the charioteer, reins in hand, sinking down in battle, tormented by Shalva's arrows, I held him up, O mighty-armed one

Even beside Krishna, service does not mean an absence of wounds. Daruka stays at his post not because he feels no pain, but because he holds to his duty. His steadfastness is what makes Krishna's fight possible at the level of the human chariot.
