एतेषु हि नरव्याघ्र जीवत्सु न कथं चन शक्यः शूरसुतः हन्तुम् अपि वज्रभृता स्वयम्eteṣu hi naravyāghra jīvatsu na kathaṃ cana śakyaḥ śūrasutaḥ hantum api vajrabhṛtā svayamfor as long as they live, O tiger among men, the son of Shura could not be slain by any means, even by the wielder of the thunderbolt himself

ततः अपश्यम् महाराज प्रपतन्तम् अहम् तदा सौभात् शूरसुतम् वीर ततः माम् मोहः आविशत्tataḥ apaśyam mahārāja prapatantam aham tadā saubhāt śūrasutam vīra tataḥ mām mohaḥ āviśatthen, O great king, I saw the son of Shura falling from Saubha, O hero, and bewilderment overcame me
तस्य रूपम् प्रपततः पितुः मम नराधिप ययातेः क्षीणपुण्यस्य स्वर्गात् इव महीतलम्tasya rūpam prapatataḥ pituḥ mama narādhipa yayāteḥ kṣīṇapuṇyasya svargāt iva mahītalamthe form of my father, falling, O lord of men, was like Yayati, his merit exhausted, falling from heaven to the surface of the earth
विशीर्णगलितोष्णीषः प्रकीर्णाम्बरमूर्धजः प्रपतन् दृश्यते ह स्म क्षीणपुण्यः इव ग्रहःviśīrṇagalitoṣṇīṣaḥ prakīrṇāmbaramūrdhajaḥ prapatan dṛśyate ha sma kṣīṇapuṇyaḥ iva grahaḥwith his turban unravelled and slipping, his garments and hair scattered, falling, he appeared like a planet whose merit is exhausted
ततः शार्ङ्गम् धनुःश्रेष्ठम् करात् प्रपतितम् मम मोहात् सन्नः च कौन्तेय रथोपस्थे उपाविशम्tataḥ śārṅgam dhanuḥśreṣṭham karāt prapatitam mama mohāt sannaḥ ca kaunteya rathopasthe upāviśamthen Sharnga, the best of bows, fell from my hand, and, undone by bewilderment, I sank down and sat on the chariot's seat, O Kaunteya
ततः हाहाकृतम् सर्वम् सैन्यम् मे गतचेतनम् माम् दृष्ट्वा रथनीडस्थम् गतासुम् इव भारतtataḥ hāhākṛtam sarvam sainyam me gatacetanam mām dṛṣṭvā rathanīḍastham gatāsum iva bhāratathen my whole army, bereft of sense, cried out in lamentation, seeing me seated on the chariot as if lifeless, O Bharata
प्रसार्य बाहू पततः प्रसार्य चरणौ अपि रूपम् पितुः अपश्यम् तत् शकुनेः पततः यथाprasārya bāhū patataḥ prasārya caraṇau api rūpam pituḥ apaśyam tat śakuneḥ patataḥ yathāI saw the form of my father falling with arms and legs outstretched, like a falling bird
तम् पतन्तम् महाबाहो शूलपट्टिशपाणयः अभिघ्नन्तः भृशम् वीराः मम चेतः व्यकम्पयन्tam patantam mahābāho śūlapaṭṭiśapāṇayaḥ abhighnantaḥ bhṛśam vīrāḥ mama cetaḥ vyakampayanand the heroes, spears and pikes in hand, striking him fiercely as he fell, shook my mind, O mighty-armed one
ततः मुहूर्तात् प्रतिलभ्य संज्ञाम् अहम् तदा वीर महाविमर्दे न तत्र सौभम् न रिपुम् न शाल्वम् पश्यामि वृद्धम् पितरम् न च अपिtataḥ muhūrtāt pratilabhya saṃjñām aham tadā vīra mahāvimarde na tatra saubham na ripum na śālvam paśyāmi vṛddham pitaram na ca apithen, after a moment, regaining my senses in the great turmoil, O hero, I saw there neither Saubha, nor the enemy, nor Shalva, nor my aged father
ततः मम आसीत् मनसि माया इयम् इति निश्चितम् प्रबुद्धः अस्मि ततः भूयः शतशः विकिरन् शरान्tataḥ mama āsīt manasi māyā iyam iti niścitam prabuddhaḥ asmi tataḥ bhūyaḥ śataśaḥ vikiran śarānthen it became certain in my mind: this is maya; then I awoke and once more began scattering arrows by the hundreds
