ततः माम् अब्रवीत् सूतः प्राञ्जलिः प्रणतः नृप साधु संपश्य वार्ष्णेय शाल्वम् सौभपतिं स्थितम्tataḥ mām abravīt sūtaḥ prāñjaliḥ praṇataḥ nṛpa sādhu saṃpaśya vārṣṇeya śālvam saubhapatiṃ sthitamThen the charioteer, joining his palms and bowing, said to me, O king: 'Look closely, Varshneya -- Shalva, lord of the Saubha, stands before you'
अलम् कृष्ण अवमन्यैनम् साधु यत्नम् समाचर मार्दवम् सखिताम् च एव शाल्वात् अद्य व्यपाहरalam kṛṣṇa avamanyainam sādhu yatnam samācara mārdavam sakhitām ca eva śālvāt adya vyapāhara'Enough, Krishna, of underestimating him; make a proper effort; set aside your gentleness and friendship toward Shalva today'
जहि शाल्वम् महाबाहो मा एनम् जीवय केशव सर्वैः पराक्रमैः वीर वध्यः शत्रुः अमित्रहन्jahi śālvam mahābāho mā enam jīvaya keśava sarvaiḥ parākramaiḥ vīra vadhyaḥ śatruḥ amitrahan'Kill Shalva, O mighty-armed one; do not let him live, Keshava; with all your might, O hero, the enemy must be slain, destroyer of foes'
न शत्रुः अवमन्तव्यः दुर्बलः अपि बलीयसा यः अपि स्यात् पीठगः कः चित् किम् पुनः समरे स्थितःna śatruḥ avamantavyaḥ durbalaḥ api balīyasā yaḥ api syāt pīṭhagaḥ kaḥ cit kim punaḥ samare sthitaḥ'An enemy must not be despised by the strong even if weak -- let alone one seated apart, still less one standing in battle'
स त्वम् पुरुषशार्दूल सर्वयत्नैः इमम् प्रभो जहि वृष्णिकुलश्रेष्ठ मा त्वाम् कालः अत्यगात् पुनःsa tvam puruṣaśārdūla sarvayatnaiḥ imam prabho jahi vṛṣṇikulaśreṣṭha mā tvām kālaḥ atyagāt punaḥ'So you, tiger among men, with all your might, O lord, kill him, best of the Vrishni race; let not time pass you by again'
न एष मार्दवसाध्यः वै मतः न अपि सखा तव येन त्वम् योधितः वीर द्वारका च अवमर्दिताna eṣa mārdavasādhyaḥ vai mataḥ na api sakhā tava yena tvam yodhitaḥ vīra dvārakā ca avamarditā'He is not one to be won over by gentleness, nor is he your friend, for he made war on you, O hero, and ravaged Dvaraka'

Daruka reminds Krishna not of cruelty but of measure. Gentleness becomes a fault when shown to one who deliberately destroys and, given more time, will only do more harm. Mercy is not obliged to prolong violence.
