द्रौपदी उवाचdraupadī uvācaDraupadi said
न अवमन्ये न गर्हे च धर्मम् पार्थ कथं चन ईश्वरम् कुतः एव अहम् अवमंस्ये प्रजापतिम्na avamanye na garhe ca dharmam pārtha kathaṃ cana īśvaram kutaḥ eva aham avamaṃsye prajāpatimI do not despise or blame dharma at all, O Partha; how could I disdain Ishvara, Prajapati?
आर्ता अहम् प्रलपामि इदम् इति माम् विद्धि भारत भूयः च विलपिष्यामि सुमनाः तत् निबोध मेārtā aham pralapāmi idam iti mām viddhi bhārata bhūyaḥ ca vilapiṣyāmi sumanāḥ tat nibodha meKnow, O Bharata, that I speak this out of pain; and I shall grieve yet more — be kind and hear me.
कर्म खलु इह कर्तव्यम् जातेन अमित्रकर्शन अकर्माणः हि जीवन्ति स्थावराः न इतरे जनाःkarma khalu iha kartavyam jātena amitrakarśana akarmāṇaḥ hi jīvanti sthāvarāḥ na itare janāḥOne who is born here must act, O scourge of foes; without action only the immobile live, not other beings.
आ मातृस्तनपानात् च यावत् शय्योपसर्पणम् जङ्गमाः कर्मणा वृत्तिम् आप्नुवन्ति युधिष्ठिरā mātṛstanapānāt ca yāvat śayyopasarpaṇam jaṅgamāḥ karmaṇā vṛttim āpnuvanti yudhiṣṭhiraFrom the drinking of the mother's breast to the crawling toward a bed, moving beings sustain life through action, O Yudhishthira.
जङ्गमेषु विशेषेण मनुष्याः भरतर्षभ इच्छन्ति कर्मणा वृत्तिम् अवाप्तुम् प्रेत्य च इह चjaṅgameṣu viśeṣeṇa manuṣyāḥ bharatarṣabha icchanti karmaṇā vṛttim avāptum pretya ca iha caAmong moving beings, especially humans, O bull of the Bharatas, wish to gain a livelihood through action, both here and after death.
उत्थानम् अभिजानन्ति सर्वभूतानि भारत प्रत्यक्षम् फलम् अश्नन्ति कर्मणाम् लोकसाक्षिकम्utthānam abhijānanti sarvabhūtāni bhārata pratyakṣam phalam aśnanti karmaṇām lokasākṣikamAll beings know effort, O Bharata, and taste the manifest fruit of deeds, witnessed by the world.
पश्यामि स्वम् समुत्थानम् उपजीवन्ति जन्तवः अपि धाता विधाता च यथा अयम् उदके बकःpaśyāmi svam samutthānam upajīvanti jantavaḥ api dhātā vidhātā ca yathā ayam udake bakaḥI see that creatures live by their own effort — even Dhatar and Vidhatar — like this crane standing in the water.
स्वकर्म कुरु मा ग्लासीः कर्मणा भव दंशितः कृत्यम् हि यः अभिजानाति सहस्रे न अस्ति सः अस्ति वाsvakarma kuru mā glāsīḥ karmaṇā bhava daṃśitaḥ kṛtyam hi yaḥ abhijānāti sahasre na asti saḥ asti vāDo your own work, do not despair; be armed with action, for one who truly knows the right deed is not found among a thousand, or is rare indeed.
तस्य च अपि भवेत् कार्यम् विवृद्धौ रक्षणे तथा भक्ष्यमाणः हि अनावापः क्षीयते हिमवान् अपिtasya ca api bhavet kāryam vivṛddhau rakṣaṇe tathā bhakṣyamāṇaḥ hi anāvāpaḥ kṣīyate himavān apiAnd for him too there is work for growth and protection; for even Himavan, if consumed and never replenished, would be exhausted.
उत्सीदेरन् प्रजाः सर्वाः न कुर्युः कर्म चेत् यदि अपि च अपि अफलम् कर्म पश्यामः कुर्वतः जनान्utsīderan prajāḥ sarvāḥ na kuryuḥ karma cet yadi api ca api aphalam karma paśyāmaḥ kurvataḥ janānAll beings would perish if they did not act; and even when action bears no fruit, we still see people acting.
न अन्यथा हि अभिजानन्ति वृत्तिम् लोके कथं चनna anyathā hi abhijānanti vṛttim loke kathaṃ canafor otherwise they would have no way of knowing life in this world at all
