त्रिद्वाराम् अर्थसिद्धिं तु नानुपश्यन्ति ये नराः ॥
तथैवानर्थसिद्धिं च यथा लोकास् तथैव ते ॥
कर्तव्यं त्व् एव कर्मेति मनोर् एष विनिश्चयः ॥
एकान्तेन ह्य् अनीहो ऽयं पराभवति पूरुषः ॥
कुर्वतो हि भवत्य् एव प्रायेणेह युधिष्ठिर ॥
एकान्तफलसिद्धिं तु न विन्दत्य् अलसः क्व चित् ॥
असंभवे त्व् अस्य हेतुः प्रायश्चित्तं तु लक्ष्यते ॥
कृते कर्मणि राजेन्द्र तथानृण्यम् अवाप्यते ॥
अलक्ष्मीर् आविशत्य् एनं शयानम् अलसं नरम् ॥
निःसंशयं फलं लब्ध्वा दक्षो भूतिम् उपाश्नुते ॥
अनर्थं संशयावस्थं वृण्वते मुक्तसंशयाः ॥
धीरा नराः कर्मरता न तु निःसंशयं क्व चित् ॥
एकान्तेन ह्य् अनर्थो ऽयं वर्तते ऽस्मासु सांप्रतम् ॥
न तु निःसंशयं न स्यात् त्वयि कर्मण्य् अवस्थिते ॥
अथ वा सिद्धिर् एव स्यान् महिमा तु तथैव ते ॥
वृकोदरस्य बीभत्सोर् भ्रात्रोश् च यमयोर् अपि ॥
अन्येषां कर्म सफलम् अस्माकम् अपि वा पुनः ॥
विप्रकर्षेण बुध्येत कृतकर्मा यथा फलम् ॥
पृथिवीं लाङ्गलेनैव भित्त्वा बीजं वपत्य् उत ॥
आस्ते ऽथ कर्षकस् तूष्णीं पर्जन्यस् तत्र कारणम् ॥
वृष्टिश् चेन् नानुगृह्णीयाद् अनेनास् तत्र कर्षकः ॥
यद् अन्यः पुरुषः कुर्यात् कृतं तत् सकलं मया ॥
तच् चेद् अफलम् अस्माकं नापराधो ऽस्ति नः क्व चित् ॥
इति धीरो ऽन्ववेक्ष्यैव नात्मानं तत्र गर्हयेत् ॥
कुर्वतो नार्थसिद्धिर् मे भवतीति ह भारत ॥

anyeṣāṃ karma saphalam asmākam api vā punaḥ ||
viprakarṣeṇa budhyeta kṛtakarmā yathā phalam ||
pṛthivīṃ lāṅgalenaiva bhittvā bījaṃ vapaty uta ||
āste 'tha karṣakas tūṣṇīṃ parjanyas tatra kāraṇam ||
vṛṣṭiś cen nānugṛhṇīyād anenās tatra karṣakaḥ ||
yad anyaḥ puruṣaḥ kuryāt kṛtaṃ tat sakalaṃ mayā ||
tac ced aphalam asmākaṃ nāparādho 'sti naḥ kva cit ||
iti dhīro 'nvavekṣyaiva nātmānaṃ tatra garhayet ||

कर्तव्यम् तु एव कर्म इति मनोः एष विनिश्चयः एकान्तेन हि अनीहः अयम् पराभवति पूरुषःkartavyam tu eva karma iti manoḥ eṣa viniścayaḥ ekāntena hi anīhaḥ ayam parābhavati pūruṣaḥAction must without fail be performed — such is the decision of Manu; a man wholly inactive suffers defeat.
कुर्वतः हि भवति एव प्रायेण इह युधिष्ठिर एकान्तफलसिद्धिम् तु न विन्दति अलसः क्व चित्kurvataḥ hi bhavati eva prāyeṇa iha yudhiṣṭhira ekāntaphalasiddhim tu na vindati alasaḥ kva citFor one who acts here, something is generally gained, Yudhishthira; the idle man attains complete fruit nowhere at all.
असंभवे तु अस्य हेतुः प्रायश्चित्तम् तु लक्ष्यते कृते कर्मणि राजेन्द्र तथा अनृण्यम् अवाप्यतेasaṃbhave tu asya hetuḥ prāyaścittam tu lakṣyate kṛte karmaṇi rājendra tathā anṛṇyam avāpyateIf success is impossible, the cause is seen and the means of atonement as well; when the deed is done, O king, freedom from debt is attained.
अलक्ष्मीः आविशति एनम् शयानम् अलसम् नरम् निःसंशयम् फलम् लब्ध्वा दक्षः भूतिम् उपाश्नुतेalakṣmīḥ āviśati enam śayānam alasam naram niḥsaṃśayam phalam labdhvā dakṣaḥ bhūtim upāśnuteMisfortune enters into the man who lies idle; the skillful man, having gained undoubted fruit, partakes of prosperity.
अनर्थम् संशयावस्थम् वृण्वते मुक्तसंशयाः धीराः नराः कर्मरताः न तु निःसंशयम् क्व चित्anartham saṃśayāvastham vṛṇvate muktasaṃśayāḥ dhīrāḥ narāḥ karmaratāḥ na tu niḥsaṃśayam kva citWise men, free of doubt and devoted to action, choose even a doubtful misfortune over certain inaction.
एकान्तेन हि अनर्थः अयम् वर्तते अस्मासु सांप्रतम् न तु निःसंशयम् न स्यात् त्वयि कर्मणि अवस्थितेekāntena hi anarthaḥ ayam vartate asmāsu sāṃpratam na tu niḥsaṃśayam na syāt tvayi karmaṇi avasthiteNow misfortune is clearly upon us; but it would not be certain, had you remained engaged in action.
अथ वा सिद्धिः एव स्यात् महिमा तु तथा एव ते वृकोदरस्य बीभतोः भ्रात्रोः च यमयोः अपिatha vā siddhiḥ eva syāt mahimā tu tathā eva te vṛkodarasya bībhatoḥ bhrātroḥ ca yamayoḥ apiOr success itself might come, along with your greatness, and that of Vrikodara, Bibhatsu, and the twin brothers.
अन्येषाम् कर्म सफलम् अस्माकम् अपि वा पुनः विप्रकर्षेण बुध्येत कृतकर्मा यथा फलम्anyeṣām karma saphalam asmākam api vā punaḥ viprakarṣeṇa budhyeta kṛtakarmā yathā phalamWhether the deeds of others or our own bear fruit, the one who has acted comes to know the outcome only with the passage of time.
पृथिवीम् लाङ्गलेन एव भित्त्वा बीजम् वपति उत आस्ते अथ कर्षकः तूष्णीम् पर्जन्यः तत्र कारणम्pṛthivīm lāṅgalena eva bhittvā bījam vapati uta āste atha karṣakaḥ tūṣṇīm parjanyaḥ tatra kāraṇamThe farmer, having broken the earth with his plow and sown the seed, then sits in silence; the rain is the cause there.
वृष्टिः चेत् न अनुगृह्णीयात् अनेनः तत्र कर्षकः यत् अन्यः पुरुषः कुर्यात् कृतम् तत् सकलम् मयाvṛṣṭiḥ cet na anugṛhṇīyāt anenaḥ tatra karṣakaḥ yat anyaḥ puruṣaḥ kuryāt kṛtam tat sakalam mayāIf the rain does not favor him, the farmer is without fault: whatever another man could have done, all of that I have done.
तत् चेत् अफलम् अस्माकम् न अपराधः अस्ति नः क्व चित् इति धीरः अन्ववेक्ष्य एव न आत्मानम् तत्र गर्हयेत्tat cet aphalam asmākam na aparādhaḥ asti naḥ kva cit iti dhīraḥ anvavekṣya eva na ātmānam tatra garhayetIf this bears no fruit for us, there is no fault of ours; thus the wise man, having reflected, does not blame himself.
कुर्वतः न अर्थसिद्धिः मे भवति इति ह भारत निर्वेदः न अत्र गन्तव्यः द्वौ एतौ हि अस्य कर्मणःkurvataḥ na arthasiddhiḥ me bhavati iti ha bhārata nirvedaḥ na atra gantavyaḥ dvau etau hi asya karmaṇaḥIf the one who acts does not attain his aim, O Bharata, one should not fall into despair; action has two possible outcomes.
सिद्धिः वा अपि अथ वा असिद्धिः अप्रवृत्तिः अतः अन्यथाsiddhiḥ vā api atha vā asiddhiḥ apravṛttiḥ ataḥ anyathāsuccess or failure; inaction is something else altogether
बहूनाम् समवाये हि भावानाम् कर्म सिध्यति गुणाभावे फलम् न्यूनम् भवति अफलम् एव वाbahūnām samavāye hi bhāvānām karma sidhyati guṇābhāve phalam nyūnam bhavati aphalam eva vāA deed succeeds when many factors come together; when a quality is lacking, the fruit is diminished or altogether absent.
अनारम्भे तु न फलम् न गुणः दृश्यते अच्युतanārambhe tu na phalam na guṇaḥ dṛśyate acyutabut where nothing is undertaken, neither fruit nor quality is seen at all, O Achyuta

译文

‘He who does not perceive the three doors to the attainment of an aim likewise fails to understand failure. Manu decided: action must be performed. The wholly inactive man suffers defeat; the one who acts generally gains something, while the idle man attains fruit nowhere. If success is impossible, action still reveals its cause and discharges the debt: “I did all that I could.” Misfortune seizes the idle man; the skillful man attains prosperity. The wise choose even a doubtful attempt over certain inaction. The farmer plows the earth and sows the seed; the rain is no longer in his power. If the rain does not come, he is not at fault, because he did everything humanly possible. Action has two possible outcomes — success and failure; inaction has neither fruit nor any manifest quality.’
