जनमेजय उवाच भगवन् श्रोतुम् इच्छामि पार्थस्य अक्लिष्टकर्मणः विस्तरेण कथाम् एताम् यथा अस्त्राणि उपलब्धवान्janamejaya uvāca bhagavan śrotum icchāmi pārthasya akliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ vistareṇa kathām etām yathā astrāṇi upalabdhavānJanamejaya said: O Bhagavan, I wish to hear at length this story of the untiring Partha, how he obtained his weapons
कथम् स पुरुषव्याघ्रः दीर्घबाहुः धनंजयः वनम् प्रविष्टः तेजस्वी निर्मनुष्यम् अभीतवत्katham sa puruṣavyāghraḥ dīrghabāhuḥ dhanaṃjayaḥ vanam praviṣṭaḥ tejasvī nirmanuṣyam abhītavathow this tiger among men, the long-armed, radiant Dhananjaya, fearlessly entered the empty forest
किम् च तेन कृतम् तत्र वसता ब्रह्मवित्तम कथम् च भगवान् स्थाणुः देवराजः च तोषितःkim ca tena kṛtam tatra vasatā brahmavittama katham ca bhagavān sthāṇuḥ devarājaḥ ca toṣitaḥand what he did there while dwelling in it, O best knower of Brahman; and how the Bhagavan Sthanu and the king of gods were pleased
एतत् इच्छामि अहम् श्रोतुम् त्वत्प्रसादात् द्विजोत्तम त्वम् हि सर्वज्ञ दिव्यम् च मानुषम् च एव वेत्थ हetat icchāmi aham śrotum tvatprasādāt dvijottama tvam hi sarvajña divyam ca mānuṣam ca eva vettha hathis I wish to hear by your grace, best of the twice-born; for you are all-knowing and know both the divine and the human
अत्यद्भुतम् महाप्राज्ञ रोमहर्षणम् अर्जुनः भवेन सह संग्रामम् चकार अप्रतिमम् किल पुरा प्रहरताम् श्रेष्ठः संग्रामेषु अपराजितःatyadbhutam mahāprājña romaharṣaṇam arjunaḥ bhavena saha saṃgrāmam cakāra apratimam kila purā praharatām śreṣṭhaḥ saṃgrāmeṣu aparājitaḥit is said, O most wise one, that Arjuna, the foremost of warriors and unconquered in battles, once fought an unparalleled, wondrous, hair-raising battle with Bhava
यत् श्रुत्वा नरसिंहानाम् दैन्यहर्षातिविस्मयात् शूराणाम् अपि पार्थानाम् हृदयानि चकम्पिरेyat śrutvā narasiṃhānām dainyaharṣātivismayāt śūrāṇām api pārthānām hṛdayāni cakampirehearing of which the hearts of even the heroic Parthas, lions among men, trembled with grief, joy, and utter astonishment
यत् यत् च कृतवान् अन्यत् पार्थः तत् अखिलम् वद न हि अस्य निन्दितम् जिष्णोः सुसूक्ष्मम् अपि लक्षये चरितम् तस्य शूरस्य तत् मे सर्वम् प्रकीर्तयyat yat ca kṛtavān anyat pārthaḥ tat akhilam vada na hi asya ninditam jiṣṇoḥ susūkṣmam api lakṣaye caritam tasya śūrasya tat me sarvam prakīrtayaand whatever else Partha did, tell it all; for I see nothing blameworthy in the conduct of Jishnu, not even the slightest; proclaim to me all the deeds of that hero
