Bṛhadaśva said: 'When Nala had gone, the lovely-hipped Damayanti awoke, refreshed from sleep, but terrified in the empty forest. Not seeing her husband, overcome with grief and dread, she cried out loudly: "O great king! O Nishadha!" She wept: "O lord, O great king, O master, why do you abandon me? I am ruined, I am lost, I am afraid in this empty forest. Are you not, great king, a knower of dharma and a speaker of truth? How then, having spoken falsely, did you leave, forsaking me asleep? How could you abandon your devoted, faithful wife, especially when she has done no wrong, while wrong was done by another? Will you now make true those words which you once spoke about me in the presence of the guardians of the world? Enough of this jest, bull among men; I am afraid, unassailable one, show yourself. I see you, I see you, O king, you are standing there, Nishadha, hidden among the bushes! Why do you not answer me? How cruel that you will not embrace and comfort me as I weep like this. I do not grieve for myself, nor for anything else; I grieve for you: how will you be alone? How will you, thirsty, hungry and worn with weariness, be in the evening at the roots of trees without me?" Then, tormented by fierce grief, as though blazing with anguish, she ran here and there weeping, in sorrow. Again and again the girl leapt up, again and again she fell, bewildered; again and again, afraid, she shrank back, again and again she cried out and wept. Tormented by fierce grief, sighing again and again, bewildered, Bhaimi, devoted to her husband, came forth weeping and said...'

Damayanti's lament is remarkable: even abandoned, her first concern is for Nala. Faithfulness here is not blindness to pain, but the capacity to remember another's good in the very moment of one's own wound.
