ततो रथाद् अवप्लुत्य राजानं बाहुको ऽब्रवीत् ॥
परोक्षम् इव मे राजन् कत्थसे शत्रुकर्शन ॥
अथ ते गणिते राजन् विद्यते न परोक्षता ॥
प्रत्यक्षं ते महाराज गणयिष्ये बिभीतकम् ॥
अहं हि नाभिजानामि भवेद् एवं न वेति च ॥
संख्यास्यामि फलान्य् अस्य पश्यतस् ते जनाधिप ॥
मुहूर्तम् इव वार्ष्णेयो रश्मीन् यच्छतु वाजिनाम् ॥
तम् अब्रवीन् नृपः सूतं नायं कालो विलम्बितुम् ॥
बाहुकस् त्व् अब्रवीद् एनं परं यत्नं समास्थितः ॥
प्रतीक्षस्व मुहूर्तं त्वम् अथ वा त्वरते भवान् ॥
एष याति शिवः पन्था याहि वार्ष्णेयसारथिः ॥
अब्रवीद् ऋतुपर्णस् तं सान्त्वयन् कुरुनन्दन ॥
त्वम् एव यन्ता नान्यो ऽस्ति पृथिव्याम् अपि बाहुक ॥
त्वत्कृते यातुम् इच्छामि विदर्भान् हयकोविद ॥
शरणं त्वां प्रपन्नो ऽस्मि न विघ्नं कर्तुम् अर्हसि ॥
कामं च ते करिष्यामि यन् मां वक्ष्यसि बाहुक ॥
विदर्भान् यदि यात्वाद्य सूर्यं दर्शयितासि मे ॥
अथाब्रवीद् बाहुकस् तं संख्यायेमं बिभीतकम् ॥
ततो विदर्भान् यास्यामि कुरुष्वेदं वचो मम ॥
अकाम इव तं राजा गणयस्वेत्य् उवाच ह ॥
सो ऽवतीर्य रथात् तूर्णं शातयाम् आस तं द्रुमम् ॥
ततः स विस्मयाविष्टो राजानम् इदम् अब्रवीत् ॥
गणयित्वा यथोक्तानि तावन्त्य् एव फलानि च ॥
अत्यद्भुतम् इदं राजन् दृष्टवान् अस्मि ते बलम् ॥
श्रोतुम् इच्छामि तां विद्यां यथैतज् ज्ञायते नृप ॥
tato rathād avaplutya rājānaṃ bāhuko 'bravīt ||
parokṣam iva me rājan katthase śatrukarśana ||
atha te gaṇite rājan vidyate na parokṣatā ||
pratyakṣaṃ te mahārāja gaṇayiṣye bibhītakam ||
ahaṃ hi nābhijānāmi bhaved evaṃ na veti ca ||
saṃkhyāsyāmi phalāny asya paśyatas te janādhipa ||
muhūrtam iva vārṣṇeyo raśmīn yacchatu vājinām ||
tam abravīn nṛpaḥ sūtaṃ nāyaṃ kālo vilambitum ||
bāhukas tv abravīd enaṃ paraṃ yatnaṃ samāsthitaḥ ||
pratīkṣasva muhūrtaṃ tvam atha vā tvarate bhavān ||
eṣa yāti śivaḥ panthā yāhi vārṣṇeyasārathiḥ ||
abravīd ṛtuparṇas taṃ sāntvayan kurunandana ||
tvam eva yantā nānyo 'sti pṛthivyām api bāhuka ||
tvatkṛte yātum icchāmi vidarbhān hayakovida ||
śaraṇaṃ tvāṃ prapanno 'smi na vighnaṃ kartum arhasi ||
kāmaṃ ca te kariṣyāmi yan māṃ vakṣyasi bāhuka ||
vidarbhān yadi yātvādya sūryaṃ darśayitāsi me ||
athābravīd bāhukas taṃ saṃkhyāyemaṃ bibhītakam ||
tato vidarbhān yāsyāmi kuruṣvedaṃ vaco mama ||
akāma iva taṃ rājā gaṇayasvety uvāca ha ||
so 'vatīrya rathāt tūrṇaṃ śātayām āsa taṃ drumam ||
tataḥ sa vismayāviṣṭo rājānam idam abravīt ||
gaṇayitvā yathoktāni tāvanty eva phalāni ca ||
atyadbhutam idaṃ rājan dṛṣṭavān asmi te balam ||
śrotum icchāmi tāṃ vidyāṃ yathaitaj jñāyate nṛpa ||
Bahuka leapt down from the chariot and said to the king: "King, you boast before me as though of something unseen. If there is no hiddenness in your reckoning, I will count this bibhitaka tree directly before you. I do not know whether it is so or not; I will count its fruits while you watch. Let Varshneya hold the reins of the horses for a moment." The king said: "This is no time to delay," but Bahuka, applying the utmost effort, replied: "Wait a moment. But if you are in such haste, here is a good path — go on with Varshneya as your charioteer." Ritupurna began to conciliate him: "Bahuka, there is no other driver on earth but you. For your sake I wish to travel to Vidarbha, knower of horses; I have taken refuge in you, do not hinder me. I will grant you any wish you name, if you bring me to Vidarbha before sunset today." Bahuka said: "First let us count this bibhitaka, then I will go to Vidarbha. Grant me this word of mine." The king, as though reluctantly, said: "Count it." Bahuka quickly climbed down, felled the tree, and having counted, said to the king: "The fruits are exactly as many as you said. I have seen your astonishing power, and I wish to hear the science by which this is known."
