तम् उवाच ततो राजा त्वरितो गमने तदा ॥
विद्ध्य् अक्षहृदयज्ञं मां संख्याने च विशारदम् ॥
बाहुकस् तम् उवाचाथ देहि विद्याम् इमां मम ॥
मत्तो ऽपि चाश्वहृदयं गृहाण पुरुषर्षभ ॥
ऋतुपर्णस् ततो राजा बाहुकं कार्यगौरवात् ॥
हयज्ञानस्य लोभाच् च तथेत्य् एवाब्रवीद् वचः ॥
यथेष्टं त्वं गृहाणेदम् अक्षाणां हृदयं परम् ॥
निक्षेपो मे ऽश्वहृदयं त्वयि तिष्ठतु बाहुक ॥
एवम् उक्त्वा ददौ विद्याम् ऋतुपर्णो नलाय वै ॥
तस्याक्षहृदयज्ञस्य शरीरान् निःसृतः कलिः ॥
कर्कोटकविषं तीक्ष्णं मुखात् सततम् उद्वमन् ॥
कलेस् तस्य तदार्तस्य शापाग्निः स विनिःसृतः ॥
स तेन कर्शितो राजा दीर्घकालम् अनात्मवान् ॥

译文

The king, hastening to depart, said: "Know that I know the heart of the dice, and am skilled in counting." Bahuka answered: "Give me this science, and from me accept the heart of horses, bull among men." Ritupurna, mindful of the weight of his errand and desiring the knowledge of horses, said: "So be it. Take the supreme heart of the dice as you wish, and let the heart of horses remain with me as a deposit held in you." So saying, Ritupurna gave the knowledge to Nala. When Nala had learned the heart of the dice, Kali came forth from his body, ceaselessly vomiting from his mouth the sharp venom of Karkotaka. From the suffering Kali there also came forth the fire of the curse: for a long time, bereft of himself, he had suffered within the king, burned day and night by the venom of the king of serpents.

注释

Knowledge breaks the grip of Kali. What entered through the game departs once Nala grasps the inner law of the game and ceases to be its victim.
