Lomasha said: 'To the assembled gods, Brahma, the forefather of the worlds, said: "Go, gods, all of you, as you wish and desire. Through the great passage of time, the ocean will return to its own nature, the kinsmen of the great king Bhagiratha having become the cause." Yudhishthira said: "How, brahmin, will the kinsmen become the cause here? And how will the ocean be filled through the toil of Bhagiratha? This I wish to hear in detail, O rich in austerity. Tell me, brahmin, the supreme deed of kings." Vaishampayana said: "Thus asked by the great-souled Dharmaraja, the best of brahmins began to tell the greatness of the great Sagara."'

In Brahma's words Yudhishthira hears a hidden bond between generations. His question opens one of the chapter's central themes: a descendant can complete a task begun long before his time.
