Ganga said: 'What do you desire, great king? What shall I give you? Tell me this, best of men, and I will do as you say.' Lomasha said: 'Thus addressed, the king then replied to the daughter of Himavat: "Giver of boons, great river, my ancestors, the sons of Sagara, who were searching for the horse, were sent by Kapila to the abode of Vaivasvata. Sixty thousand great Sagaras, encountering the radiance of Kapila, perished in an instant. For those who perished thus, there is no dwelling in heaven until you wash these bodies with your waters. O greatly blessed one, lead my ancestors, the sons of Sagara, to heaven. For their sake I entreat you, O great river." Hearing the king's words, Ganga, honored by the world, greatly pleased, spoke this word to Bhagiratha: "I will do as you say, great king, without doubt. But my current, when I fall from heaven, is hard to hold back. No one in the three worlds is able to bear it, except the best of the gods, blue-throated Maheshvara. Propitiate Hara, the boon-giver, with tapas, O mighty-armed one. That god will hold me on his head when I fall, and will grant your wish, desiring the welfare of your ancestors." Hearing this word, O king, the great king Bhagiratha went to Mount Kailasa and propitiated Shankara. Then, in due course of time, having met with him, the best of men obtained from him the boon: the bearing of Ganga for the sake of the heavenly dwelling of his ancestors.'

Ganga agrees to save them, but her power needs Shiva. Grace descends when the stream of compassion meets a support able to hold it.
