Lomasha said: "Having seen the terrible-faced Mada coming toward him like Death with gaping mouth, the god Shatakratu, in fear, his arm frozen still, licked his lips again and again. Then the king of the gods, struck with fear, said to Chyavana: 'Bhargava, from this day these Ashvins shall be worthy of soma. Truly I speak this word to you, brahmin. Let your undertaking not prove false; let this be the supreme law. I know, O sage among brahmins, that you will not act in vain. These Ashvins shall be worthy of soma just as you have made them worthy today, Bhargava, so that your power may be still further revealed, and so that the fame of Sukanya and her father may spread throughout the world. For this I arranged the manifestation of your might. Therefore grant me your favor; let it be as you wish.' When Shakra had spoken thus to the great Chyavana, his anger swiftly passed, and he released Purandara. The mighty Chyavana divided Mada, which he had earlier created, among drink, women, dice, and the hunt. Thus, having banished Mada, satisfied Shakra with soma, and performed sacrifice for the gods together with the Ashvins and for that king, the best of speakers proclaimed his power in all the worlds and dwelt in the forest with the loving Sukanya."

Mada is not destroyed but distributed among the places of human risk: intoxication, lust, gambling, and the hunt. The verse makes a subtle point: a dangerous force can be limited, but it must never be considered harmless.
