Ashtavakra said: "Here, O king, in the assemblies of mighty hosts, among incomparable kings, there is no free space left for disputants, as there is none for the cry of geese on a vast expanse of water. Bandi, who thinks himself an excessive disputant, you will not surpass me in speech today: you have fallen into the mouth of the rivers like a stream. Stand firm before me, before the blazing splendor of fire." Bandi said: "Do not wake a sleeping tiger, do not wake a poisonous snake licking its lips. Know this: having struck it on the head with your foot, you will not escape unbitten. Whoever, out of pride, being himself very weak, strikes a mountain, shatters his own hand together with its nails; and no wound is seen upon the rock. All kings before the king of Mithila are as low as mountains before Mainaka, as calves before a bull." Lomasha said: "Ashtavakra, roaring in the assembly, grew angry and said to Bandi: 'Answer the word I have spoken; and I will answer your word.'"

The dispute opens with threats and images of strength, but Ashtavakra brings it back to the rule of answer. Knowledge has no need of noise: it demands sequence and clear measure.
