Bharadvaja said: "Here they recount gathas such as this, once spoken by the gods. Long ago, my son, there was a rishi named Baladhi, a mighty one. Shaken by grief for his son, he performed a most arduous austerity and obtained the wish: 'Let my son be immortal.' The gods granted him a boon, but not equal to that of the immortals: 'A mortal cannot be immortal; he will live on a condition.' Baladhi said: 'As these mountains, best among the gods, stand forever, inexhaustible, let them be the condition of my son's life.'" Bharadvaja continued: "Then a son was born to him, Medhavi, ever wrathful. Hearing of this, he grew proud and began to despise the rishis. Insulting the munis and wandering the earth, he encountered the immensely mighty sage Dhanushaksha. Medhavi insulted him, and that mighty one cursed him: 'Become ash.' But having said this, he did not turn him to ash. Seeing Medhavi unharmed, the mighty Dhanushaksha destroyed the condition of his life by means of buffaloes. When the condition was destroyed, the boy died at once. Then the father, taking up his dead son, began to weep. Seeing him weeping, the munis spoke the former Vedic gatha; hear it from me: 'A mortal has no power whatsoever to pass beyond the goal appointed by fate; Dhanushaksha destroyed the mountains by means of buffaloes.' Thus children, having obtained boons, become filled with pride and impetuous, and perish very swiftly. May this not happen to you. Here is Raibhya, mighty in strength, and such likewise are his two sons. Son, be attentive, and act so as not to approach him. For if he grows angry, my son, he is capable of causing you pain out of wrath: he is learned, an ascetic, quick to anger, a great rishi."
