तम् आपतन्तं संप्रेक्ष्य शूलहस्तं जिघांसया ॥
यवक्रीः सहसोत्थाय प्राद्रवद् येन वै सरः ॥
जलहीनं सरो दृष्ट्वा यवक्रीस् त्वरितः पुनः ॥
जगाम सरितः सर्वास् ताश् चाप्य् आसन् विशोषिताः ॥
स काल्यमानो घोरेण शूलहस्तेन रक्षसा ॥
अग्निहोत्रं पितुर् भीतः सहसा समुपाद्रवत् ॥
स वै प्रविशमानस् तु शूद्रेणान्धेन रक्षिणा ॥
निगृहीतो बलाद् द्वारि सो ऽवातिष्ठत पार्थिव ॥
निगृहीतं तु शूद्रेण यवक्रीतं स राक्षसः ॥
ताडयाम् आस शूलेन स भिन्नहृदयो ऽपतत् ॥
यवक्रीतं स हत्वा तु राक्षसो रैभ्यम् आगमत् ॥
अनुज्ञातस् तु रैभ्येण तया नार्या सहाचरत् ॥
tam āpatantaṃ saṃprekṣya śūlahastaṃ jighāṃsayā ||
yavakrīḥ sahasotthāya prādravad yena vai saraḥ ||
jalahīnaṃ saro dṛṣṭvā yavakrīs tvaritaḥ punaḥ ||
jagāma saritaḥ sarvās tāś cāpy āsan viśoṣitāḥ ||
sa kālyamāno ghoreṇa śūlahastena rakṣasā ||
agnihotraṃ pitur bhītaḥ sahasā samupādravat ||
sa vai praviśamānas tu śūdreṇāndhena rakṣiṇā ||
nigṛhīto balād dvāri so 'vātiṣṭhata pārthiva ||
nigṛhītaṃ tu śūdreṇa yavakrītaṃ sa rākṣasaḥ ||
tāḍayām āsa śūlena sa bhinnahṛdayo 'patat ||
yavakrītaṃ sa hatvā tu rākṣaso raibhyam āgamat ||
anujñātas tu raibhyeṇa tayā nāryā sahācarat ||
Seeing him approach with spear in hand, intent on killing him, Yavakri suddenly leapt up and fled toward the lake. But, finding the lake without water, he hastened on toward all the rivers; and they too had been dried up. Pursued by the terrible rakshasa with the spear in hand, he in fear suddenly rushed to his father's agnihotra fire. As he was entering there, a blind shudra guard forcibly restrained him at the door; he stopped, lord of the earth. While Yavakri was held back by the shudra, the rakshasa struck him with the spear, and he, his heart pierced through, fell down. Having slain Yavakri, the rakshasa returned to Raibhya and, with Raibhya's permission, lived with that woman.'
